 Wario Ware D.I.Y.
Hit nail! Poke dog! Stomp the badger!
Big news folks! I’ve got a new job! I’m making video games now!
My boss?
Oh, he’s this big, fat, meanie who’s breath smells like garlic!
That’s right, you guessed it Wario’s back! He has a new Nintendo DS game called “Wario Ware D.I.Y.” (Do,It Yourself) which is simply put the company pretty much saying “go wild” and handing over the whole game making thing to the gamer.
But first, if you're not familiar with the series, you should know that WarioWare was/is all about super quick "microgames."
I hope you have fast relexes. Because these challenges last only about 5 to 10 seconds tops. Half the challenge is in figuring out what needs to be done by the single clue that pops up from the start. It could be something simple like "Start the car!" and you'd tap the key in the ignition.

Now Everyone Can Be Workin’ For the Wario
There's a little bit of everything here:programming, drawing, and composing music.
A word of caution: What you take away from WarioWare D.I.Y. is completelyall about what you put into it.
If all you want is a collection of quick, amusing microgames in the traditional WarioWare fashion, prepare to be disappointed; D.I.Y. contains less than 100 microgames, which isn't really all that many more than were included in WarioWare Snapped! But D.I.Y. wasn't intended to be a standalone WarioWare sequel. The included microgames aren't the point. Rather, they're a guide, and a chance to learn by example. The real meat of D.I.Y. is the element referred to in the title: A chance to do it yourself ( hence the name) and create your own Wario microgames.

But before you have the chance to make a game from scratch, you're going to have to tap your way through a somewhat long, and drawn out tutorial process. Sadly, it can be quite boring.

Ironically, the teaching assistance from Wario is the most irritating part of the package. Wario continually butts in on mandatory lessons given on drawing, music creation and programming, claiming he doesn’t understand. A little annoying after awhile.
After about an hour of tapping at the screen to skip through page after page of silly jokes and exhaustive repetition, I nixed the rest of the tutorial and jumped straight into the Super MakerMatic, which was finally unlocked!

You start off by drawing some simple things – a bowling ball and some pins, for example. Then you head into the Assembly screen and set them up where you want them to show up at the start of the game. Ok that was easy enough. I can do this!

When that’s done, you come up with the rules of the game. Tap the ball, select the option to tell it to move towards the pins and choose how fast it goes. Head back into the graphics editor where you must animate them falling over. Hey, wait what? This is getting a wee bit complicated for me. After all is said and done - you’ve just made a bowling game.

SideNote: Getting to this point has taken me approximately six hours!

WarioWare D.I.Y. only allows "tapping" games. So you won't be able to create challenges where you drag objects from one side of the screen to the other, nor will you be able to build games that use the D-pad or buttons of the Nintendo DS.

Wii Did It Ourseleves!
Using friend codes, you can upload your newly created games for viewing on your Wii or you can link up with other DS owners and share games.

I would consider “WarioWare D.I.Y.” an educational game of sorts. No, it won’t teach you reading, writing and ‘rithmetic, but it will give you lessons in what it takes to making your favorite video games. And that’s really more important in life isn’t it?

I had fun with the game until I hit the road block that comes fromactually having to create something myself from scratch. Don’t get me wrong, I found creating your own microgames a great idea, even given how overwhelming and tedious it was for me at times.

Do not go out and get, I repeat do not go out and get “WarioWare D.I.Y.” if you're just interested in playing through the next batch of microgames from Nintendo (kinda like what I did.)
Get it to see if you have what it takes to do what Nintendo does.

Which means this game will simply click for some, and for some it won’t.
But for the creative gamers out there, who’ve thought to themselves, “Hey, I can do that!’ or “I could make this game so much better in so many ways” (a little full of ourselves, aren’t we?) then you have found a game that is perfect for you.
Game designers in training rejoice!
