 Starfox Command
Oh Look! A Falling Star!

Yah that's about the best way to describe this abomination of a once Classic series.

Star Fox command is like a momma's boy version of Advanced Wars mixed in with arena like battle stages that get on your nerves after the 5th mission.

What were these guys thinking? Why can't they leave well enough alone? The First two Star Fox games were timeless rail shooters with a lot of heart. They tested your reflexes and aiming, and not much else. What's so friggin' hard about that?

Star Fox Command starts you off with some of the lamest Space opera storyline nonsense since Star Wars Episode 3.
Fox is alone in this cruel world, and the star fox team has all decided to part ways. Peppy, the rabbit, realizes he's "Too old for this Sh-t" and becomes a pencil-pushing General. Falco's off being his usual rebel self, and ol' Slippy the frog is getting married…There's a tons of back and forth about how Fox left Kristal at the alter or some junk, so now she runs off pissed,….. oh yeah. Enough of that nonsense.

Even though previous games revolved around rail shooting mechanics, which other classics such as Panzer dragoon, have since implemented and become infamous for. SFC decides that isn't enough. Instead your game begins with a top down view map of your location, with icons of your ship, your mother ship, enemies, enemy mother ships, and bases, all laid out in front of you. You take your stylus and draw a line from your ship to where you want to go. Once you have designated where your squadron will go, you hit enter and watch all the icons move.. WEEeeeeeeeeeeeee. When one of your ships gets in contact with an icon of an enemy or enemy's base,. You go into battle mode.
Battle mode plays out just like the boss modes in the Star fox 64 game. You are placed on a square arena, with enemies to shoot down. You have full motion of where you fly, but it doesn't make much difference as the arenas you play in are quite small. You usually only have one objective, to shoot down one enemy, or a small group of enemies, or that one mother ship, and then move on.

Once you have achieved this, you go back to the overhead map and move your pieces again. You have to keep count of a few things like where the enemies are, how many turns you have left, and if your mother ship is left open to attack. It doesn't matter how well you play in battle mode, if you happen to miss an oncoming missile to your base, or you run out of turns trying to locate the last enemy base in fog, the mission's over.

My problem isn't with this RTS mode, or the free roaming battle mode, but with the lack of any depth or variety in either of them. The Missions are the same. Over and over again.

You fight the same enemies, and the same mother ship, over, and over, and over again.
About the only interesting aspects is when you engage an oncoming missiles heading to your mother ship. This battle mode plays out like a small mini game where you must fly your ship in a series of boost squares while trying to catch up the missile and destroying. Yes it's a cool gimmick, but not enough to hold this shallow ass game together. Especially not for 35 friggin bucks. Hey, I know there's only so much that can be packed into a DS title. I also know that it's a hell of a lot more than this.

You would think, for such a shallow 1st party title, that all the meat and potatoes went into the multiplayer mode. Oh how wrong I was.
The Multiplayer consists of Ranked battle, and Free Battle, which is essentially the same crap. Compared to a game like crimson Skies, there could've been a hell of a lot more modes for MP. Where's CTF? Or Hold the bomb? I mean come on!!

In another lame ass attempt to make you "feel" like you got your money's worth. The game forces you to play the single player multiple times in order unlock different story arcs and see "slightly" different worlds and enemies. It's very obvious, and even a bit insulting. Seriously this is a main Nintendo property. Show some loving care guys.

Star Fox command looks great for a DS game, but that's about all I can really say positive about it. It's about as challenging as holding on to a bar of soap with wet hands, but only about half as fun.

Star Fox games are very fun and simple reflex games with a lot of heart. Somewhere around the original gamecube version Star Fox lost that. Along with his balls.
