I went to see “Bad Teacher” this past weekend-yes, you heard me right- amongst all the new summer blockbusters out right now such as“Green Lantern”, and “Kung Fu Panda” etc. I chose to see “Bad Teacher.”
Don’t ask me why ,it’s certainly not because Cameron Diaz is the main star, I know that.
She’s an alright actress I guess and I know she’s a big star and all but I have to admit I just haven't been that impressed with her in any movie I’ve ever seen her in.
”Bad Teacher” is just meh, M-E-H, meh. I could stop there, and that sentence alone would be more than enough. But I’m not going to stop there, because that’s just the kind of girl I am!
However, if you want to stop reading there, I doubt I’m going to say anything more insightful than “Bad Teacher” is ok, mediocre, because that’s about all it is, a run-of-the-mill raunchy comedy.
There are highs, and there are lows, but for the most part, the movie just kinda stays in the middle, not particularly great, but not particularly awful.
But I’m getting ahead of myself.
Some teachers just don’t give an F
Cameron Diaz plays Elizabeth Halsey, who is a bad, very bad teacher for all the wrong reasons. “Shorter hours, summers off, no accountability.”
She’s actually more than that! She’s a mean, cruel human being.
She somehow stumbled into teaching, even though her real dream is to be just a rich, trophy wife.
The other teachers know Elizabeth isn’t good at her job. They drop hints. She ignores them, smokes weed in the school parking lot, shows up hung-over most days just to name a few.
Besides landing a rich husband, all she really, really wants in life are bigger boobs. So determined to raise the $10,000 for a new pair of ta-tas she resorts to criminal activities. She steals money raised at the school car wash, cheats on a state-wide test to win a bonus, so on and so forth. You get the point, she’s a despicable person who will do whatever it takes to get those new breasts.
And oh yeah, before I forget-Justin Timberlake stars in “Bad Teacher” as well. I certainly couldn’t overlook mentioning that because frankly he’s great in this. Not only is Timberlake funny in this but he’s also likable and really, really believable! Luckily when things get stale he shows up.
I would go as far as to say he’s the best thing about “Bad Teacher.”
So here goes[a] “he’s the best thing about “Bad Teacher.”
Ain’t that a hoot! A pop (dirty pop!) singer shines above all the professional actors.
Deserves Only A Mildly Passable Grade
Now back to the convoluted storyline, things only get worse as the movie goes on. Diaz continues to get more and more diabolical until we get near to the end and I guess someone in the production department or something realized that this wasn’t going anywhere and/or we needed to start “liking”our evil main character. That’s when the whole thing takes a sudden turnaround, and she suddenly transforms from being a “bad” teacher as well as “bad” person into a sort of a decent human being and get this.. ultimately becoming the school’s guidance counselor! HUH?? What just happened? How does that make any sense?
It never fully clicks though because even when she’s “decent” she never really becomes a character you like or sympathize with even when she redeems herself. Hard to explain, but I think you all know what I’m getting at right?
I’m probably coming off a little too harsh, aren’t I?
I will admit it and go as far as to say, the movie is at times entertaining and funny. I did laugh... out loud...in fact a few times.
Let me put it this way, it’s one of those movies that you’ll watch, get a good chuckle at a few times and never, ever think about again.
When someone asks if you liked “Bad Teacher”, you’ll stop think about it for a second, shake your head and shrug your shoulders. Just meh, M-E-H-, meh!
And that’s all that really needs to be said about it. Class dismissed.
Rated: R
The R rating is well deserved here. There’s a ton of foul language, racist / gay jokes, crude bathroom humor, and lots and lots of drug and alcoholic use.
