WTF for PSP
Work Time Fun
Hey, you ever get that urge to play a game that makes you feel like a worthless factory worker, that performs a dead end, monotonous job day in and day out, yet keeps doing it for a measly paycheck? If you answered yes, well then "WTF" was made for you baby!
No joke, that really is the premise of "WTF", a handful of demented and often times, tedious mini-games that are thrown together "WarioWare" style. In that I mean, there is no storyline, no incentive or ultimate goal just a bunch of mini missions or in this case, part-time jobs. Whereas in "WarioWare" which enabled you to pick up, play and put down fully entertained, some of "WTF"s mini-games go on for 10 minutes at a time and really start to feel like full 8 hr. shifts!
Some of these jobs include Pendemonium, which places you in a sweatshop-like setting and will have you rotating and capping an endless (and I mean endless) number of pens over and over again. Here's an example of my work load counter that started at 1 and ran to a possible 36 digit figure... 000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,001 - it seemed like I had some work to do! Or to Lumberjack which will have you chopping wood while trying to avoid chopping furry woodland creatures in half by mistake. As well as,Chick Sorting where you must determine if a chick is male or female and then sort them accordingly in their crates. Awfully boring!
Performing well at these tasks will earn you a small paycheck and with this money you will be rewarded by being made to blow it all at the "Shenmue" style gumball machines that doles out a variety of odd, useless trinkets and get this – new jobs to perform more worthless tasks! No promotions or hopes of moving up the corporate ladder for you! You are only given 4 jobs to start off with, which means some unnecessary repetition within the gameplay- a major flaw which could easily been avoided with more mini-game selections. So why didn't the developers want to give us this variety, why?
The problem is "WTF" attempts to poke fun at "work" but the underlying fact is- work fundamentally sucks!
Sidenote: the Japanese title is "Baito Hell 2000" which translates to "part time job hell". Has the realization hit you yet? This game is a relentless slave driving cycle of mind numbing jobs to perform until your eyes glaze over from boredom. So if the ultimate goal was to demonstrate to us the full tediousness of blue collar occupations in Japan then I would say Bravo! A superb representation - and that's putting it kindly!
Come to think of it, the Japanese have always been known for their twisted sense of humor (the parody lost something in the translation I guess).
Now I know some of you might be thinking that it isn't entirely fair to compare this to "WarioWare", but you can see where 1 major comparison can be made- both titles give players an assortment of bizarre mini- games. Whereas in "Wario" which gives us quick -fire reaction time games lasting only a few seconds each, in"WTF" you very often stay on a game for 10 whole minutes. Mini-games have become instant bestsellers because they deliver an assortment of short and satisfying wham, bam bursts of game challenges. Get in, and get out! This game on the other hand, managed to change my perception of mini-games into becoming dreaded mindless chores that I needed to perform.
So here I am at the end of my shift, standing in front of the time clock, removing my hair net, silently screaming inside WTF!! And yes, by that I mean the other definition of the acronym!
