In case you missed it, Valentine's Day is here.
And, of course, it wouldn't be the same without Sweethearts or Conversation Hearts— you know, those little heart shaped candies with sayings on them like "LETS KISS" and "HUG ME."
In terms of tradition Sweethearts are about as synonymous with V-Day as a box of chocolates and a bouquet of flowers since 1902.
ButI don't think many people associate the word "scandal" with Sweethearts, do you?
Well, this year something's happened to change it all, and Sweethearts will never be the same again-literally.
From "USA Today" comes the news that Sweethearts candy are getting an update after 145 years. Necco is updating the colors, flavor and messages.
Gasp!
Necco have changed the recipe!
This has sent shockwaves throughout the candy world. There's even
Facebook group called "Ick! Yuck! Blech! Bring back the original NECCO Sweethearts flavors! Here
Yep -you guessed it, these nice people want, no-demand Necco to bring back the original Sweethearts flavors! OMG, a whole group (900 members and counting) formed a revolt regarding new insequential candy flavors!? Aren't there more important things in the world to stand up and take a stand about ? Like why they suddenly decide to discontinue Loreal's "Ravishing Rose" shade of lipstick!! Garsh.
Clears Throat Sorry, back to the subject of Sweethearts, shall we?
Have you ever tasted Sweethearts?
Now on this day of love, I don't want to make this a negative article or anything; so I'll just say I never really liked the taste of them. I find them to taste like an unholy combination of sugary pieces of chalk and Rolaids
to be perfectly honest with you (oh you know I'm right!) Everyone will agree, the fun is all about picking up a box for the cute sayings printed on them.
SideNote:I have to say, I think the quality control isn’t very good on these little doo-daddy's . There are always quite a few that are illegible, some are a little bumpy and are more round shaped not really heart shaped. But hey, they're like 49 cents a box.
Anyway, out are banana and wintergreen. In are green apple and blue raspberry. Another case of New Coke? Only time will tell.
And with the new flavors, Necco is also printing new sayings and acronyms, which were chosen from some online contest they held. The top picks were, LOL, TWEET ME, and TEXT ME, and the really bizarre one FAX ME.
FAX ME? Seriously?
"I love you" is so 2009, I guess.
Ironically, Necco’s brand tag line is “An American Classic.” I’m be curious to see if this decision to update a classic works for the company or not. Sometimes a company just needs to stay true to it's roots for tradition and nostalgia sake. Or change its tag line.
And it doesn't end there, next month Necco plans to put out a new line of Sweethearts connected to the movie Twilight! I kid you not.
Twilight?!
You know the vampire book series. They'll be released at the same time as the DVD and will have sayings such as "BITE ME," "BEDAZZLE" (it sparkles!-I swear) and "LIVE 4 EVER."
Weird tie-in if you ask me. I would have assumed they would link themselves to a more appropriate holiday like let's say-oh I don't know-Halloween! Being vampires and all, but who am I to say?
Anyway, on this day I wish you all lots of love and happiness.
Have a great Valentine's Day...and oh yeah FAX ME!
Update:"BITE ME" has been removed from "Twilight" Sweethearts. Apparently the company received complaints from the public. "Some thought that was a bit sexually suggestive."- Jackie Hague -Necco candy spokesperson. Haha.
